In honor of National Volunteer Month, we highlight some of the ways Valencia Group hotels (and friends) help their communities.

When you find someone who shares your values, there’s a good basis for friendship. You want to stick with those people. The same principle holds true for companies – like the friendship between Valencia Group, b4, and the Midway Foundation.

During the economic downturn in the late 2000s, Midway, a Houston-based real estate development and investment firm, noticed something: Many of the organizations that they supported through the Midway Foundation were struggling due to a decline in charitable giving, including those advocating for health, education, and the underprivileged. To create a sustainable flow of funding, Midway did something a little unconventional: They started b4, a hand sanitizer company, to funnel profits to worthwhile charities. Valencia Group is proud to carry b4 hand sanitizer in their hotels.

In 2010, Valencia Group received the James A. Moran Legacy Award from Midway honoring Midway’s late founding partner, an award given annually to those who represent Moran’s character, vision, passion, and his commitment to teamwork and generosity to others. And, recognizing that April is National Volunteer Month, we thought we’d highlight some other ways that a few of the Valencia Group hotels are giving back to their communities.

Hotel Valencia Riverwalk [San Antonio, Texas]

The upscale and timeless Hotel Valencia Riverwalk is a reliable friend to San Antonio silent auctions every year, donating 200 one-night stays to be enjoyed by winning bidders. San Antonians invest in the hotel and the hotel invests in them, as evidenced by the hotel’s partnership with Dress for Success and Career Gear, who help unemployed men and women on a path toward self-sufficiency. Hotel Valencia Riverwalk also works with the Houston Street Charities and their San Antonio Cocktail Conference each December, participating in the events, offering discounted rooms, and providing free meeting space for conference-goers. Finally, they recently started a partnership with The Children’s Shelter in San Antonio and are excited to take the kids to a San Antonio Missions baseball game soon.

Hotel Valencia Santana Row [San Jose, California]

Excellent taste and style is in the DNA of Hotel Valencia Santana Row, and so is volunteering. Every summer, employees invest their time at a volunteer day at the Silicon Valley Humane Society. Later in the year, each December, Hotel Valencia Santana Row rallies to collect canned goods for the Second Harvest Food Bank. Finally, the hotel is excited to finalize a partnership with the local Salvation Army, through which their employees will volunteer at Camp Redwood Glen.

Hotel Sorella CITYCENTRE [Houston, Texas]

Like many Valencia Group properties, Hotel Sorella CITYCENTRE in Houston puts an ecological spin on its charitable efforts. Each Earth Day, they plant a tree within CITYCENTRE with a plaque affixed that indicates the year the tree was planted, what type of tree it is, and a mention of the charitable contribution that was made. Visitors to CITYCENTRE, a mixed-use development with vibrant shopping, dining, and residential scenes, are able to see the hotel’s contributions literally growing around them every year.
